Pradeep Mathur
Pradeep has a substantial track record of achievements and building businesses in commercial and investment banking globally, particularly in Asia and China. This has been gained in senior positions with banks like Chase Manhattan, Deutsche and DEPFA and then as a sought-after independent practitioner.
He started his career in State Bank of India in 1972 as a management trainee. After completing 2 years of extensive training he took positions of responsibilities with the Bank in the fields of Micro Finance (helped establish the first rural micro finance bank), Credit, Corporate Finance and finally as the Senior District HQ Branch Manager.
In 1986, he was tasked by SBI to set up Offshore Banking in Tokyo. He successfully established and ran the unit, initiating the Bank's entry in the international markets in debt syndication, leasing, money market trading, bond issuance and trading, Japanese corporate finance and lastly derivatives. He also assisted the Ministry of Finance in the capital market operations of Indian corporations both public and private sector.
He joined Chase Manhattan in 1989 in Tokyo in their derivatives group and then moved to Hong Kong as Director Sales in Asia. He was instrumental in establishing Chase as a pre-eminent derivative player in the Asian market particularly in India, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and China. Based on his success in China, he was named by Chase as the Country Manager and the CEO for China in 1992, with a mandate to set up and build Chase’s franchise there. He proceeded to do so and in next four years set up four offices and branches with a team of 75 and an eight digit annual revenue.
In 1996 he joined Deutsche Bank in Singapore as the Regional Head to set up their Project related Export Finance business. He oversaw the establishment and build-up of business in Asia and also globally for projects with Japanese and Korean interests. During his stint he concluded large project finance transactions in industry sectors like oil & gas, power, refining, infrastructure, transportation, metals and mining, steel and other industrials in countries in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. He landed three “Deals of the Year” awards from Euromoney in 2001 and 2002 for projects in UK, South Africa and India and one from Asia Money in 1999 for a project in Vietnam.
In 2004 he became a private practitioner and took up consulting assignments on strategic and management issues. In that capacity he advised ANZ Investment Bank, Export Development Canada, Nippon Export & Investment Insurance, MHI and DEPFA Bank.
In 2006, following an advisory to DEPFA for setting up a global export finance business, he joined them to set the business up as a global head and worked till July 2009.
Pradeep has a First Class Bachelor’s in Science with honours in Physics and Mathematics and then a First Class in Master’s in Theoretical Physics also with honours, both from India. He also did research in Atomic Physics as a national talent scholarship recipient for a year before joining the financial services.
He is married with three children. He devotes his spare time in teaching and mentoring in orphanages.
